Political Controversy Erupts in Assam as Jairam Ramesh Labels Chief Minister “Viceroy of the Northeast
Guwahati, 19th January: Amid Congress’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Jairam Ramesh stirred a political controversy by dubbing Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the ‘viceroy of the northeast’ for the BJP.
This statement was made in the context of a protest by Angkita Dutta, a former Assam Youth Congress president, seeking justice from Rahul Gandhi against Srinivas BV after being expelled from the party for “anti-party activities.”
Dutta, who accused Srinivas of harassment, felt that her complaint was not taken seriously by the Congress high command.
Jairam Ramesh suggested that the issue between Dutta and Srinivas could have been resolved if Himanta Biswa Sarma did not interfere, whom he dubbed as the ‘naradmuni’ and the ‘viceroy of the northeast’ for the BJP.
Addressing the protest in Sivasagar, Jairam Ramesh said, “I have spoken to Angkita Dutta multiple times. She also came to my home. The reality is that this issue could be resolved. Both of them, our Youth Congress President (Srinivas BV) and Angkita are very emotional people. I spoke to both of them. I tried to resolve the issue and get justice… But Assam CM did not let it happen… The matter is in the Supreme Court right now. The inquiry has been done. And all necessary action would be taken. But the Assam CM (naradmuni) has made matters worse, and you all know who the naradmuni is… it’s the BJP’s viceroy sitting in Guwahati and controlling the entire northeast…”
The matter has escalated to the Supreme Court, and BJP leaders have called for justice for Angkita Dutta.
The political drama unfolded as Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra entered Assam, bringing national attention to the incident and the statements made by Jairam Ramesh.
