Political Firestorm Erupts as Sarma Accuses Gogoi’s Wife of Pakistan Ties

Guwahati: A charged atmosphere has gripped Assam politics as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leveled serious allegations against Elizabeth Colburn, wife of Congress leader and Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi.

Sarma, during a press conference in Guwahati, claimed Colburn maintained “good relations” with the Pakistan Army and undertook 19 trips between India and Pakistan, purportedly accompanied by Pakistani military officials.

Further, Sarma alleged that Colburn worked in Pakistan, continued to receive salary from Pakistan after shifting to Delhi for NGO work, and that Gaurav Gogoi himself had visited Pakistan for fifteen days, in a personal capacity, while Colburn returned after seven days.

In a swift and vehement rebuttal, Gaurav Gogoi accused the BJP IT cell and Chief Minister Sarma of engaging in “petty politics,” particularly during a period of national unity against Pakistan following the recent Pahalgam attack. Gogoi emphasized the need for strong governmental action against Pakistan, stating, “We want the government to take strong measures against Pakistan and extract a heavy price.” The Congress party rallied behind Gogoi, dismissing Sarma’s accusations as baseless and asserting Gogoi’s integrity as an “honest leader” confronting what they termed a “police state.”

The escalating political conflict between Sarma and Gogoi, already marked by heated exchanges on social media, has now escalated to a national stage, with the personal lives of the leaders becoming central to the dispute. This latest exchange has intensified the already strained political landscape in Assam, drawing national attention to the increasingly personal nature of the political rivalry.
