Political Sparring Continues as Corruption Allegations Fly Between Assam CM and Rahul Gandhi

Guwahati, 21st January: Amidst the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ by Congress in Assam, the party continues to level corruption allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In response, Sarma fired back, asserting that the Gandhis are “more corrupt.”

“You are out on bail in a corruption case. Your family had a hand in the absconding of Warren Anderson from the country, the main accused in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Your family was behind the escape of the main accused in the Bofors scam. 2G scam and coal scam happened under the patronage of your family. The money stolen in this scam is 5 times more than the GDP of Assam. The surprising thing is that you indulge in corruption and have the courage to call others corrupt. The people of Assam gave a befitting reply to your “Nyaya Yatra”. I can understand your frustration”, CM Sarma posted on X.

Sarma accused Congress leaders of being on bail in corruption cases and alleged their involvement in various scandals, including the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, Bofors scam, and 2G and coal scams. He emphasized the magnitude of the money stolen in these scams, claiming it to be five times more than Assam’s GDP.

The war of words escalated as Rahul Gandhi, during the Yatra, claimed that Chief Minister Sarma could provide lessons on corruption to other BJP-ruled states. Sarma, in turn, dismissed these allegations on the Yatra’s first day, branding the Gandhi family as the ‘most corrupt’ and accusing them of using a ‘duplicate’ surname.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, speaking at a press conference as part of the Yatra, highlighted corruption as a central issue for the people of the state. The Yatra is set to cover 833 km across 17 districts, continuing until January 25.
