Polling Begins for Mizoram’s Sinlung Hills Council Election Amid Tight Security
Aizawl, Mizoram — Voting for the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) election, which will determine the leadership of the 12-member council, began at 7 a.m. on November 5, across 38 polling stations in Mizoram’s Hmar-majority northeastern region.
Authorities, underscoring the significance of the election, implemented strict security measures, with 16 polling stations near the Assam and Manipur borders classified as “critical” zones. Entry points to these areas have been sealed to maintain order and prevent any security incidents.
A total of 23,789 eligible voters, including 11,914 women, are set to cast their ballots for candidates vying for the 12 council seats. Counting is expected to begin after 4 p.m., once all ballot boxes reach their designated constituency headquarters.
The election sees 49 candidates in contention, including one woman, representing major political parties and independent groups. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), allied with the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC), is fielding candidates in all constituencies—ZPM contesting eight seats, and HPC fielding four candidates. The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) is contesting ten seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated one candidate. Additionally, 14 independent candidates are competing, with two from the Hmar People’s Convention (Reformed), who are supported by the MNF.
The SHC, established in July 2018, represents a significant development in Mizoram’s local governance and Hmar community self-administration. It originated from the peace accord signed between the Mizoram government and the former Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), marking a milestone in regional stability. The council spans 31 villages across the Aizawl, Kolasib, and Saitual districts, covering 12 constituencies, with an additional two seats that are nominated.
In the 2019 SHC election, the MNF-HPC alliance dominated with ten seats, leaving two seats to independents. This election, however, has brought in diverse candidates, making it one of the most competitive council polls since the SHC’s inception.
The Sinlung Hills Council elections underscore Mizoram’s ongoing efforts toward inclusive governance and the empowerment of its tribal regions, with the outcomes anticipated to shape local policy for years to come.
