Popy Hazarika from Assam Secures Gold in 59 kg Weightlifting Category at the 37th National Games

Sports Desk, 26th October: Indian weightlifter Popy Hazarika secured a gold medal in the women’s 59kg event on October 26 at the 37th National Games.

Prior to this, Popy Hazarika had also claimed a gold medal in the women’s 59kg category during the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2023.

Notably, earlier this month, Assam’s badminton women’s team made history at the 37th National Games by clinching the team title on October 21.

The Assam women’s team, comprised of Ashmita Chaliha, Isharani Baruah, Mayuri Barman, Manali Bora, and Maini Boruah, displayed an exceptional performance throughout the tournament.

They remained undefeated in the group stage, defeating West Bengal with a score of 4-1 and Andhra Pradesh with a 3-2 victory to secure their spot in the final.

In the championship final, Assam faced a formidable Maharashtra team that had also dominated their group, securing two commanding 5-0 wins over the Punjab and Goa women’s teams.

This achievement marked a significant moment for Assam in the ongoing National Games.
