Post Malone Set to Electrify Guwahati, Signaling New Era for Assam’s Concert Economy

Guwahati: American rap and hip-hop sensation Post Malone is slated to perform in Guwahati on December 8, a landmark announcement made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday. This highly anticipated concert marks a significant stride for the state’s recently approved concert economy policy, aiming to transform Assam into a premier destination for international musical acts.

Chief Minister Sarma, speaking at a press conference held at the Lachin Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Golaghat, confirmed the date, stating, “Post Malone will perform in Guwahati on December 8.” The artist, celebrated for his chart-topping hits such as “Rockstar,” “Circles,” “Sunflower,” and “Better Now,” is expected to draw a massive crowd as he headlines what will be Assam’s largest international concert to date.

This announcement builds on Assam’s burgeoning reputation as a vibrant hub for musical performances. The state has successfully hosted several notable acts in recent times, including Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh, who captivated audiences in Guwahati last December. Indie favorite Prateek Kuhad also graced the city with his soulful performance, establishing its growing appeal, while singer-songwriter Anuv Jain, known for his melodic indie-pop hits like “Baarishein” and “Gul,” recently energized local fans with his distinctive sound.

“We’ve identified Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Guwahati as prime concert venues that will be presented to event organizers,” Sarma elaborated, emphasizing that the Post Malone concert will leverage the momentum generated by these successful preceding shows. The eighteen-time Grammy-nominated artist’s upcoming performance is a testament to Assam’s strategic pivot following the state government’s formal approval of its concert economy framework earlier today.

Chief Minister Sarma also articulated Assam’s ambition to compete with neighboring states in attracting major concerts. “Assam aims to engage in healthy competition with Meghalaya in hosting upcoming major concerts,” he noted, referencing Shillong’s well-established reputation in India’s music scene. Shillong, in particular, witnessed an extraordinary 65-fold surge in live event consumption last year, underscoring the significant economic potential of such events. Industry experts are projecting that the Post Malone concert could usher in a substantial economic impact for Guwahati, drawing parallels to the recent Coldplay performances in Ahmedabad, which generated a remarkable Rs 641 crore windfall, with Rs 392 crore directly injected into the local economy.
