Post Poll Violence in Meghalaya’s Shella Constituency

Guwahati: Post-election violence erupted in Meghalaya due to a news channel’s incorrect reporting of the results in the Shella constituency on March 2.

A video of the incident went viral showing a young man throwing stones at security personnel while they used water cannons to try and disperse the assailants.

According to reports, some of the mob were reportedly spotted throwing stones at a fire engine.

East Khasi Hills SP Dr. Raghvendra Kumar MG commented on the matter claiming that although one news channel said that the National People’s Party (NPP) had won the seat it was actually the UDP.

”When supporters went to the SDO Sohra office, they found a different result. They became violent and aggressive after which water cannon had to be used to disperse the crowd,” SP said.

The reports stated that the situation is currently under control and that this is being done as a precaution.

Reportedly, there have been no injuries recorded thus far and no one has been arrested.

Meanwhile, protesters threw rocks at the counting centre within the DC office’s grounds and set a car on fire in the Mairang constituency where candidate Batskhem Ryntathiang came in second to current Legislator Metbah Lyngdoh of the UDP by only 155 votes.
