Pradyut Bordoloi Backs Strict Action Against Rioters, Slams Assam Govt Over Security Lapses and Communal Rhetoric

Guwahati: Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has voiced his support for Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s contentious “Shoot at Sight” directive issued in response to recent incidents of communal violence in the state.

Emphasising the need for stern measures against those attempting to disrupt communal harmony, Bordoloi stated that the Congress stands by strong punitive action in such cases to deter future unrest.

However, the MP from Nagaon did not hold back from pointing fingers at the government over glaring internal security lapses. Referring to claims that individuals from Bangladesh may have played a role in inciting the violence, Bordoloi questioned how such infiltrations were possible under the watch of the police and the Border Security Force (BSF). “If these claims are true, it reflects a major failure of the Assam government,” he said, likening the situation to conflict-ridden zones like Pahalgam. He asserted that the Chief Minister and the Home Department must take full responsibility for plugging these serious gaps in security.

At the same time, Bordoloi issued a scathing critique of CM Sarma’s political narrative, accusing him of pushing a communal agenda by promoting what he called the “Two Religious Theory.” Drawing a historical comparison, he likened the theory to the “Two-Nation Theory” once advocated by the RSS and the Muslim League—an idea that was staunchly opposed by the Congress and Mahatma Gandhi during the struggle for independence.

“After joining the BJP, the Chief Minister has embraced a political approach that is encouraging communal polarisation,” Bordoloi said, adding that such policies have created an atmosphere where fringe groups feel emboldened to indulge in violence. His remarks reflect growing concerns among opposition leaders over the evolving political discourse in Assam and its implications for social unity.
