Preparation Underway for Smooth Conduct of Lok Sabha Elections in Guwahati
Guwahati, 17th March: In the wake of the announcement of Lok Sabha Election dates, District Commissioner (DC) Sumit Sattawan chaired a crucial meeting regarding the forthcoming polls in Kamrup Metropolitan district. Specifically focusing on the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency, DC Sattawan provided insights into the electoral arrangements.
With 10 assembly segments falling under the Guwahati parliamentary constituency, comprising areas from Goalpara, Kamrup Rural, and Kamrup Metro district, the total number of voters stands at 20,19,444. This includes 9,93,268 male voters, 10,26,118 female voters, and 58 third gender voters. Notably, individuals above 85 years can cast postal ballots from their homes, with 8,000 voters in Guwahati falling in this category.
The Maniram Dewan Trade Centre has been designated as the distribution and strong room center for this election cycle, with preparations set to commence shortly at the designated venue. The electoral process timeline includes the issuance of notification on April 12, 2024, nomination filing until April 19, scrutiny on April 20, and withdrawal of nomination by April 22. Guwahati constituents will cast their votes on May 7, 2024.
A total of 2,181 polling stations have been established across Guwahati, with no sensitive polling stations identified in the city thus far. Citizens can address election-related grievances via helpline number 1950, with 25 flying squad teams deployed for monitoring. Additionally, an app has been launched to facilitate nomination filing, and reports on critical and vulnerable polling stations will be released soon.
To ensure inclusivity and accessibility, 15 model polling stations and 102 women polling stations will be established across Guwahati. With the Election Commission unveiling a three-phase voting process scheduled for April 19, April 26, and May 7, preparations are underway to facilitate a smooth and transparent electoral process in Guwahati.
