New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has exercised her constitutional prerogative, nominating four distinguished individuals to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. The nominations, officially announced late Saturday by the Ministry of Home Affairs, aim to infuse the legislative body with a rich tapestry of professional expertise spanning law, diplomacy, history, and social work. This move fills the vacancies created by the retirement of previously nominated members, aligning with the provisions of Article 80 of the Constitution.
Among the notable appointees is Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, a towering figure in India’s legal landscape. Renowned for his role as Special Public Prosecutor in the harrowing 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case, Nikam brings decades of experience from handling numerous sensitive and high-stakes prosecutions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing his admiration on X, lauded Nikam’s “exemplary” devotion to law and the Constitution, highlighting his unwavering commitment to strengthening constitutional values and ensuring dignity for common citizens throughout his legal career.
Joining him is Harsh Vardhan Shringla, a seasoned diplomat who has served India with distinction across the globe, including holding top diplomatic positions in the United States, Bangladesh, and Thailand. His invaluable international experience was further cemented with his appointment as Chief Coordinator for India’s G20 Presidency in 2023. Prime Minister Modi believes Shringla’s global insights will undoubtedly bring “unique perspectives” to the Rajya Sabha’s deliberations.
The realm of academia is represented by Meenakshi Jain, a distinguished historian and recipient of the Padma Shri. Recognised for her profound contributions to Indian history, literature, and education, Jain previously served as an Associate Professor at Gargi College, Delhi University. Prime Minister Modi conveyed his “immense joy” at her nomination, acknowledging her significant role in enriching academic discourse.
Completing the quartet is C. Sadanandan Master, a former teacher and dedicated social worker from Kerala, whose life journey is a testament to resilience and public service. In 1994, Sadanandan Master endured a brutal political attack that resulted in the loss of both his legs. Undeterred by this adversity, he continued his unwavering commitment to public service and even contested state elections on a BJP ticket. Prime Minister Modi praised his indomitable spirit, stating that “violence and intimidation couldn’t deter his spirit towards national development,” and commended his efforts as a teacher and social worker, particularly his passion for youth empowerment.
The Indian Constitution empowers the President to nominate 12 individuals to the Rajya Sabha in recognition of their exceptional contributions in fields such as literature, science, arts, and social service. With these four fresh appointments, all previously vacant nominated seats in the Upper House now stand filled, bringing diverse and accomplished voices to the legislative forum.
