Presidential polls: NDA’s Droupadi Murmu Files Nomination

Guwahati: Droupadi Murmu, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) presidential candidate, submitted her paperwork for nomination on Friday at the Parliament Library Building in New Delhi.

Murmu’s name was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was seconded by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Chief Ministers, MLAs, and MPs from states where the BJP is in power also suggested she run for president.

PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP National President JP Nadda, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Nitin Gadkari, and Arjun Munda, as well as BJP leaders Gen VK Singh (Retd), Bhupender Yadav, and Giriraj Singh, were present as she filed her nomination.

She filed her nomination in front of the Chief Ministers of every state that the BJP now controls, including Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan of Madhya Pradesh, Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam, and others.

Along with the NDA partners, Jagannath Saraka, Tukuni Sahu, Dr. Sasmit Patra, and V. Vijayasai Reddy, the head of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), are also in attendance.

The first female tribal chief to submit a nomination for the nation’s top constitutional position is Draupadi Murmu. She is an experienced politician from Odisha, and her significant academic background suggests that she will uplift the tribal communities in the nation.

Murmu has also served as a minister in Odisha and as governor of Jharkhand.

On July 18, she will compete in the presidential race against Yashwant Sinha of the opposition. She would become India’s second woman president and the nation’s first tribal leader if she were to win the election.

The first presidential candidate from Odisha to represent a significant political party or coalition is Droupadi Murmu. She is still breaking down barriers and was Jharkhand’s first female governor. From 2015 to 2021, she was the governor of Jharkhand.

Droupadi Murmu finished her studies despite difficult conditions. She was born into a low-income tribal family in a village in the backward district of Mayurbhanj in Odisha. She was a teacher at Rairangpur’s Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Center.

She studied BA at Ramadevi Women’s College in Bhubaneswar after being born on June 20, 1958.

As vice-chairman of the Rairangpur NAC, she began her political career. Between 2000 and 2004, Droupadi Murmu represented Rairangpur in the Odisha Legislative Assembly. She served as a minister and was in charge of the fisheries, commerce, and animal husbandry portfolios. From 2004 through 2009, she was a member of the Odisha assembly once more.

She received the “Nilakantha Award” for best MLA from the Odisha legislature in 2007.

Between 1979 and 1983, she worked as a junior assistant in the irrigation and power department.

She served as the state ST Morcha’s vice president in 1997 and has held a number of organisational positions in the BJP.

In addition to serving as the BJP district chairman of Mayurbhanj (West) in 2010 and 2013, Droupadi Murmu was a member of the national executive of the BJP’s ST Morcha from 2013 to 2015.

She led the BJP’s ST Morcha in Odisha between 2006 and 2009. From 2002 to 2009, she served on the BJP ST Morcha’s national executive.
