Presidential Election: Yashwant Sinha Files Nomination

Guwahati: A presidential contender for the opposition Yashwant Sinha filed his paperwork for the July 18 election on Monday.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody and the returning officer for the presidential election, received four sets of nomination papers from Sinha.

Top opposition leaders including NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, DMK’s A Raja and NC leader Farooq Abdullah were also present when Sinha submitted his nomination papers.

Sinha was announced as the nominee for the main opposition party on June 21.

NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu has already submitted her nomination paperwork last week.

The opposition parties announced Yashwant Sinha as their candidate for president last week. Nationalist Congress Party leader Sharad Pawar, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah and former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, all rejected to be the opposition parties’ presidential nominees.

The presidential election would be held on July 18 to elect a successor to incumbent Ram Nath Kovind and the result would be out on July 21. The final day of Kovind’s term is July 24.
