President’s Rule Imposed in Manipur Amidst Accusations of BJP’s “Delayed Action” and “Betrayal”

Imphal: West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and the Congress have strongly criticized the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, terming it a “very delayed” move by the BJP-led central government.

Both parties accused the BJP of “destroying democracy” in the northeastern state. The decision comes days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned, plunging the state into political uncertainty.

TMC spokesperson Joy Prakash Majumdar held Chief Minister Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the ongoing ethnic clashes and the prevailing instability. He asserted that the BJP, despite being elected with the promise of peace and good governance, has betrayed the people of Manipur and aided ethnic polarization.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury echoed these sentiments, blaming the Centre for its inaction during the escalating violence, which resulted in numerous deaths, rapes, and the destruction of homes. He argued that the imposition of President’s Rule is a desperate move by the BJP to maintain control after their political strategies failed.

In contrast, BJP MP and spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya defended the government’s decision, stating that it was the “right step at the right time.” He acknowledged that the N Biren Singh government faced challenges in handling certain issues, leading to a complex situation. However, he emphasized that the Union Home Ministry maintained control throughout the crisis. Bhattacharya expressed confidence that President’s Rule will bring peace and economic development to Manipur, while dismissing opposition criticisms as politically motivated.

This development follows months of ethnic violence in Manipur, which has resulted in over 250 deaths and significant displacement of communities.
