Pressure Groups Stage Agitations In Support for Demands In Meghalaya

Guwahati: Protests were staged in Shillong of Meghalaya on Tuesday by four pressure organisations operating under the Save Hynniewtrep Mission, demanding that their demands be fulfilled.

The protesters conducted agitations at the SP office and the DC office in Shillong today.

Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), East Jaintia National Council (EJNC), Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM), Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM), and the Confederation of Ri Bhoi People are the pressure groups that are protesting (CoRP).

The Inner Line Permit (ILP), the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule the review of the inter-state boundary MoU with Assam, the relocation of the Harijan colony, a CBI or judicial investigation into the death of Late Cherristerfield Thangkhiew, the filling of vacant positions in government departments and the immediate repeal of the Gambling Act are among the demands made by pressure groups.

The protest march was notable for the strict security measures put in place after the gathering hosted by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo People (FKJGP) on Friday descended into violence.

It should be noted that the groups are protesting in defiance of Section 144, which prohibits the amalgamation of five or more people.

Meanwhile, the agitators also met with the Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui although the meeting was not fruitful.
