Prez Droupadi Murmu Unfurls Tricolor at Delhi’s Kartavya Path

Guwahati: The nation’s flag was raised at Kartavya Path on Thursday to kick off the 74th Republic Day celebrations for the first time since President Droupadi Murmu took office last year.

Tradition dictates that the national anthem and 21-gun salute come after the unfurling of the tricolour. Notably, 105 mm Indian Field Guns were used for the 21 Gun Salute for the first time. It took the place of the old 25-pounder weapon.

The Ceremonial Battery of the 871 Field Regiment fired the Gun Salute. Lieutenant Colonel Vikas Kumar, SM, led the Ceremonial Battery. Naib Subedar Anoop Singh was in charge of the gun position.

The 21-gun salute is performed during Republic Day, Independence Day and foreign head of state visits.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the President when she arrived at Kartavya Path. An Air Force officer, Flt Lt Komal Rani, unfurled the national flag at Kartvya Path. The President received the 21 Gun Salute at the same time as the National Anthem began to play.

The President’s Bodyguard had already led President Murmu away from her home on their bay and dark bay coloured mounts. The Indian Army’s senior-most Regiment is called the President’s Bodyguard.

The President’s Bodyguard celebrated 250 years since its raising in Varanasi in 1773, making this year’s Republic Day unique.

Colonel Anup Tiwary, the Commandant of the President’s Bodyguard, rode to the right of the President’s Car, leading this prestigious group of horsemen while astride his stallion Glorious.

Lt Col Ramakant Yadav, the Second-in-Command of the Regiment, was mounted on his charger Sultan and was standing to the left of the President’s Car. The oldest Cavalry Regiment is serving as the President’s mounted ceremonial team.

President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi is the Chief Guest at this year’s parade.
