Prime Accused In DU Ragging Case Sent to 5-Day Police Remand

Guwahati: The main suspect in the ragging incident at Dibrugarh University has been placed on a five-day police remand.

The main suspect Rahul Chetry surrenders in at the Lekhapani Police Station in the Tinsukia district on Monday at six in the morning.

Since the ragging incident came to light on November 27, Chetry had been absconding.

It should be mentioned that Anand Sharma was one of two junior-year students who were beaten up by seniors and recently graduated students who were still residing in the hostel. Sharma decided to jump off the second story of his hostel since he couldn’t handle the harassment which resulted in fall shattering his backbone.

Anand Sharma underwent a successful surgery on December 1 while in the hospital.

Based on a complaint made by Sharma’s parents, Dibrugarh Police opened an investigation against five people who were allegedly engaged in the crime.

The investigation would be led by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sanghamitra Baruah, according to Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu who also announced that he had ordered a Magisterial Inquiry.

The chief minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier declared that the institution had “certainly been neglect” on the part of the university in the ragging incident.
