Prime Accused In DU Ragging Incident Surrenders

Guwahati: The primary suspect in the horrifying ragging incident at Dibrugarh University in Assam has turned handed over, officials announced on Monday.

Rahul Chetry, one of the main suspects in the Dibrugarh University ragging incident that sent a junior-year student to the hospital with serious injuries, reportedly turned himself in to police at around 6 this morning.

Chetry turned himself in to the authorities at the Lekhapani Police Station in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Anand Sharma, a junior jumped off from the second story of the Padmanath Gohain Baruah Hostel on campus and Chetry’s name surfaced during inquiries into the circumstances that led up to the occurrence.

According to reports, Chetry had fled the scene ever since the incident came to light on November 27. Meanwhile, Rahul Chetry has been placed in the custody of the Dibrugarh Police in relation to the incident.

It should be mentioned that Anand Sharma was one of two junior-year students who were beaten up by seniors and recently graduated students who were still residing in the hostel. Sharma decided to jump off the second story of his hostel since he couldn’t handle the situation where he was beaten allegedly which resulted in fall shattering his backbone. He underwent a successful surgery on December 1 while he was in the hospital.

The university administration took many actions in the wake of the incident, including creating an anti-ragging cell to investigate and stop similar situations from happening again. A five-person high-level committee was also formed to look into the occurrence and the circumstances leading up to it.

As the investigation into the incident continued, the Dibrugarh Police arrested a number of students after their names surfaced. Following the incident, the administration of Dibrugarh University also rusticated a number of students, preventing them for the following three years from being admitted to any other university in the nation.

Criticising the heinous incident of ragging, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. A close watch was maintained and follow-up action was coordinated with the district admin. Efforts on to nab the accused, the victim being provided medical care”.

“Appeal to students, say NO to Ragging,” he added.
