Prime Accused of DU Ragging Case Granted Bail

Guwahati: Rahul Chetry, the prime suspect in the ragging incident at Dibrugarh University has been granted bail.

Rahul Chetry was granted bail on Tuesday by a Dibrugarh court.

Rahul was a former student of the university and he was pursuing a law course from the JB Law College in Guwahati and studying in the third year. Rahul was expelled from the law college in December last year.

On the other hand, Pranjit Boruah and Simanta Hazarika have also been granted bail.

Rahul Chetry turned himself in to the authorities on December 5 at the Lekhapani Police Station in Tinsukia. Anand Sharma, a first-semester student, had leaped off the second story of the Padmanath Gohain Baruah Hostel on the university campus, and his name had come up during investigations into the circumstances leading up to the occurrence.

Chetry, according to reports, had fled the scene ever since the crime was discovered on November 27.

On the other hand, 22 university students have all been expelled due to their apparent involvement in the case.

The Dibrugarh Police detained a number of students after their names surfaced as the investigation into the incident continued. Following the incident, the administration of Dibrugarh University also rusticated a number of students, preventing them for the following three years from being admitted to any other university in the nation.
