Prime Minister Modi’s Sikkim Statehood Address Goes Virtual Amidst Inclement Weather

Gangtok: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s eagerly anticipated visit to Gangtok for Sikkim’s 50th Statehood Day celebrations took an unexpected turn this morning as persistent rainfall forced a change in his itinerary. Originally scheduled to land at Libing Helipad around 9:45 am and then proceed to Paljor Stadium, the adverse weather conditions led to a swift alteration of plans.

The early morning downpour severely impacted flight operations, making a physical appearance in Gangtok unfeasible. Consequently, Prime Minister Modi, who remains stationed at Bagdogra, will now address the momentous celebrations virtually. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had indicated that the rain, which commenced in the wee hours, was expected to ease up by 11:00 am, offering a brief respite from the wet spell.

Despite the last-minute shift, the spirit of festivity in Gangtok remained robust and unwavering. Hundreds of eager citizens had already converged at Paljor Stadium, patiently awaiting the Prime Minister’s arrival and demonstrating immense enthusiasm for the historic occasion. Their anticipation for the virtual address remained palpable, underscoring the significance of Sikkim’s golden jubilee.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) had, in fact, already set out for Libing Helipad to personally welcome the Prime Minister when the official announcement regarding the weather-induced change in schedule was made. The revised arrangements ensure that while the Prime Minister’s physical presence is deferred, his message of congratulations and support reaches the people of Sikkim on this landmark day.
