Prime Minister Narendra Modi Faces Congress Onslaught Ahead of Five-Nation Tour
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s impending eight-day, five-nation tour, set to commence on July 2, has drawn sharp criticism from the Congress party, which has accused him of “running away” from critical domestic issues. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes Brazil, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, and Namibia, with the BRICS Summit in Brazil being a central focus.
Congress General Secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, took to X (formerly Twitter) to launch a scathing attack, labelling Modi a “Super Premium Frequent Flier PM” and alleging that he is evading accountability on at least four pressing national concerns. Ramesh’s post, stating “When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going,” underscored the Opposition’s stance.
A key point of contention raised by Ramesh is the prolonged Manipur crisis. The Congress leader claimed that the Prime Minister has “never visited Manipur” since the outbreak of violence, despite the state remaining in deep distress for over a year due to ethnic and communal unrest.
Ramesh also referenced alleged revelations attributed to a senior defence official regarding Operation Sindoor, suggesting India faced setbacks due to high-level decisions. While the Indian Embassy in Jakarta has since denied these remarks, stating they were “quoted out of context” and misrepresented, the Congress has seized upon them.
Furthermore, the Congress general secretary highlighted President Donald Trump’s repeated, albeit unverified, claims of having brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan through a trade deal. Ramesh alleged that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding addressing these assertions, which have fueled diplomatic discussions in recent weeks.
Adding to the list of grievances, Ramesh pointed to the delayed justice for victims of the Pahalgam attack, occurring over 70 days ago. He noted suggestions of the terrorists’ involvement in earlier attacks in Poonch, Gagangir, and Gulmarg, raising questions about the government’s response.
The Congress has consistently criticised the Prime Minister for prioritising international engagements over domestic accountability. As Prime Minister Modi prepares to engage with the Global South and enhance India’s global standing, the Opposition’s allegations are expected to remain a prominent feature of the political discourse within the country.
