Priority to Local Views in Phase 2 Talks Of Assam-Meghalaya Border Row

Guwahati: The Meghalaya government will give the local opinions the utmost consideration when addressing the border disputes with Assam in the second phase of the negotiations.

According to reports, the focus of the second round of border negotiations between Assam and Meghalaya would be a pledge to settle concerns in six key areas.

Meghalaya and Assam share an 885 km long international border.

Six additional contested regions out of a total of twelve were discussed in the first round of negotiations, and then the two states signed a MoU.

Villagers in Assam and Meghalaya protested the boundary agreement reached during the first round of border talks, feeling let down by it.

“We are committed to resolve the boundary dispute with Assam once and for all. We will give priority to the will of the people,” Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui said.

In September, regional committees were established to investigate how the conflict was progressing in the other six regions.

The second phase will focus on discussing the following six points of contention: Langpih, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur, Desh Doomreah and Block-II, Block-I and Psiar-Khanduli.
