Prohibition on Dumping Garbage in Kameng River in Arunachal

Guwahati: The East Kameng district deputy commissioner has received a notification from the Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board (APSPCB) asking that the district ensure better waste management of solid wastes thrown into the Kameng River.

This action follows the filing of a complaint by the Youth Mission for Clean River (YMCR).

The District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) was ordered by the pollution board to stop dumping solid wastes into the river immediately. The board stated that solid wastes must be managed in accordance with the 2016 Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules.

APSPCB member-secretary, Tapek Riba issued a warning that if the defaulting department disobeys the order, appropriate legal action will be taken against it.

“The solid wastes must be disposed of in a scientifically sound manner, comprising several processes like segregation, collection, treatment, and disposal,” Riba said.

The board further prohibited dumping, burning, or burying solid waste in water bodies, drains, or open areas of the community. The member-secretary also gave the DC a week to produce an action taken report.

The YMCR encouraged the DC to hasten the construction of a recycling plant so as to prevent further pollution in the town.
