Prophet Row: Section 144 Imposed in Assam’s Sonitpur

Guwahari: The Sonitpur district administration has issued prohibitory orders in the whole district under Section 144 of the CrPC to avert any untoward incidents in the wake of violent protests over controversial comments against Prophet Muhammad.

This is the fifth district of the state where the orders were clamped after Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Kamrup. Sonitpur District Magistrate Deba Kumar Mishra has promulgated the prohibitory orders with immediate effect.

As a result, public gatherings of five or more persons, the carrying of firearms, meetings, demonstrations, processions, and sloganeering, as well as the use of loudspeakers, have all been forbidden.

“It has been noted that rumours on social media have sparked communal animosity in several parts of the country,” he wrote in the directive.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on June 11 that the administration is keeping a careful eye on the law-and-order situation in Assam in the wake of rioting in various states over controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammad.

Protests occurred across the country in response to scandalous remarks about Prophet Mohammad made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled politician Naveen Jindal. Separate police complaints have been filed in the state against Sharma and Jindal by the Congress, Assam Jatiya Parishad, and the AIUDF.
