Prophet Row: Section 144 Imposed in Ranchi after protests
Guwahati: Section 144 was implemented in numerous sections of Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand on Saturday after two people were killed in violent riots over Prophet Muhammad statements.
According to the Ranchi district government, heavy security personnel have been deployed in the violence-affected districts to bring the situation under control.
The internet ban has been extended until June 12 by the district administration.
It may be mentioned that as protests erupted in several towns and cities across the country on Friday against derogatory references to the Prophet made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi BJP media in-charge Naveen Kumar Jindal, at least two people died from bullet injuries in Ranchi, where police fired in the air to disperse a crowd pelting stones.
The Ranchi district government said, “Section 144 was applied in 12 police station areas of Ranchi. The situation is under control and being closely monitored. Several forces have been dispatched. The footage and films from the CCTV cameras are being examined, and the required actions will be done. The identifying procedure is in progress.”
Following reports of stone-pelting, the torching of multiple vehicles, and vandalism, the protest that began after Friday prayers turned violent. During the violent protests, many people were injured.
The district administration intervened quickly and issued a curfew in Ranchi’s most violent sections, putting the situation under control. Ranchi’s internet services were temporarily shut down until 6 am on Saturday.
Following Nupur Sharma’s remarks against minorities, massive protests have erupted across the country, particularly in Punjab, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
