Rabada Confirms Provisional Suspension for Banned Substance, Left IPL Early
Sports: In a stunning revelation that has sent ripples through the cricketing world, South African speedster Kagiso Rabada has confirmed his early departure from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) was due to a provisional suspension for the use of a banned recreational drug.
The Gujarat Titans (GT) bowler, who returned to South Africa last month after participating in just two matches, had initially cited personal reasons for his exit, leaving many speculating about the sudden move.
The confirmation came directly from the 29-year-old himself, who issued a statement through the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA), expressing deep regret for his actions. Rabada, who was acquired by the Gujarat Titans for a significant sum of Rs 10.75 crore, acknowledged the adverse analytical finding and the subsequent provisional suspension he is currently serving.
“As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug,” Rabada stated, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. He further conveyed his remorse, saying, “I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted. This privilege is much larger than me. It goes beyond my personal aspirations.”
Rabada extended his gratitude towards his franchise, Gujarat Titans, and Cricket South Africa (CSA) for the support they have provided during this challenging period. He also thanked his agent, SACA, and his legal team for their guidance, and his friends and family for their understanding and love. Looking ahead, Rabada affirmed his commitment to the sport, stating, “Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft.”
During his brief stint with the Gujarat Titans in the current IPL season, Rabada featured in two matches, securing two wickets at an average of 41.50 while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.38. Following his departure, the franchise had released a statement indicating his return to South Africa to address an important personal matter, without specifying a timeline for his potential return.
According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, the transgression that led to Rabada’s suspension occurred during the SA20 tournament held in January-February this year, where he represented MI Cape Town. While the confirmation of the provisional suspension is now public, the exact duration of the sanction is yet to be officially determined.
