Guwahati, 8th July: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed profound sorrow over the catastrophic floods ravaging Assam, using microblogging site X to extend condolences to affected families. Briefed by Assam Congress leaders, Gandhi highlighted alarming statistics: over 60 deaths, more than 53,000 displaced individuals, and 2.4 million affected by the floods.

Gandhi sharply criticized the BJP-led government’s management of the crisis, labeling it as “gross mismanagement” despite promises of a “flood-free Assam.” He called for immediate comprehensive measures including relief, rehabilitation, and compensation for victims in the short term. Additionally, Gandhi advocated for the creation of a pan-Northeast water management authority to ensure long-term flood control solutions.
