Rahul Gandhi: No Gandhi member Would Contest for Party President Post

Guwahati: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made it plain that no member of the Gandhi family should succeed him as party president, according to Rajasthan’s chief minister Ashok Gehlot. Rahul’s comment comes as competition for the Congress presidential nomination heats up.

Gehlot stated on Friday in Kerala while speaking to the media, “I have repeatedly pleaded with Rahul Gandhi to accept everyone’s offer to lead the Congress. He was adamant that no member of the Gandhi family should succeed him as head.”

Gehlot continued by saying that he would shortly submit his electoral nomination. According to a story in India Today, he stated that the Opposition must be strong given the current state of the nation.

The two candidates viewed as possible contenders for the 2019 election are Ashok Gehlot and party MP Shashi Tharoor. A resolution stating that “we authorise the incoming Congress president to appoint PCC and AICC members” is being passed at meetings of Congress committees taking place all around the nation.

Rahul Gandhi has kept quiet about his plan to compete for the party’s presidency despite the party’s backing. He had remarked in a cryptic manner that his choice will become evident after the presidential election: “Whether I become president (of Congress) or not will become clear after the presidential election takes place.”

There will be a vote for the president of the Congress on October 17. The tally will be completed on October 19.
