Rahul Gandhi reaches Imphal, to head towards Churachandpur via road

National Desk, 29 June: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Imphal on Thursday on a two-day visit to the violent hit Manipur.

According to reports, Gandhi would travel to Churachandpur to meet with leaders of the civil society organisations and the victims of the violence.

Rahul Gandhi’s trip to Manipur is crucial since Congress has criticised the government for failing to take any decisive steps to uphold law and order in the state.

Gandhi will meet with victims of violence and visit relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur, reports stated. On June 30, the leader of the Congress will meet with representatives of the Imphal valley’s civil society organisation.

On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi was criticised by the BJP for visiting Manipur, calling him a “political opportunist who wants to keep the pot boiling.”

Notably, as many as 50,000 people are staying in more than 300 relief camps throughout the state since ethnic clashes started on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. So far, the conflicts have claimed more than 100 lives.
