Rahul Gandhi to Visit Manipur, Focus on Relief Efforts Amid Ethnic Clashes

Northeast Desk, 6th July: Sources from the Congress party have indicated that Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, is scheduled to visit Manipur on July 8. During his visit, he plans to tour various relief camps and meet with Manipur Congress leaders.

Gandhi’s itinerary includes visits to Moirang and Churachandpur, where he will interact with internally displaced people seeking refuge in relief camps. This visit is part of his efforts to assess the humanitarian situation and extend support to those affected by the recent ethnic clashes in the state.

Earlier this year, Rahul Gandhi launched the Congress party’s mass outreach program, Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, from Thoubal in Manipur. This yatra spanned over 6,700 km across 15 states, culminating in Mumbai. During a rally in Manipur, Gandhi strongly criticized the BJP government for its handling of the ethnic clashes, which have claimed over 220 lives since May 2023.

In his address, Gandhi condemned what he termed as the BJP’s “politics of hatred” in Manipur and expressed dismay over the government’s response to the crisis. He highlighted the suffering of Manipuri people and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting the state to address their grievances.

Following his visit to Manipur, Rahul Gandhi is expected to proceed to Nagaland on the same day, continuing his engagement with issues affecting the northeastern states.
