Rahul Gandhi Visits Assam Amid Severe Floods, Heads to Manipur to Address Ethnic Unrest
Guwahati, 8th July: Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, arrived in Assam’s Silchar as part of his first visit to Northeast India since assuming office. His visit holds significance as Assam grapples with extensive flooding, landslides, and river overflow caused by relentless rainfall, affecting over 22.70 lakh people across 28 districts.
During his stay in Assam, Gandhi plans to meet with flood-affected residents to assess the situation firsthand and offer support to those in need. His itinerary includes meetings with local officials to discuss relief efforts and understand the immediate challenges faced by communities devastated by the natural disaster.
Following his visit to Assam, Gandhi is scheduled to travel to Manipur, where ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities has resulted in over 200 fatalities since May last year. In Manipur, he will visit a flood relief camp in Lakhipur to meet with displaced individuals and listen to their concerns.
Gandhi’s route to Manipur will pass through Jiribam district, where he plans to engage with local communities affected by ongoing unrest. His visit aims to address both immediate humanitarian needs and long-standing socio-political challenges in the region.
After completing his engagements in Manipur, Rahul Gandhi will return to Silchar airport in Assam before flying to Imphal for the next phase of his visit.
