Rahul Gandhi Visits Flood-Affected Assam, Faces BJP Criticism Over Manipur Visit

Northeast Desk, 8th July: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi embarked on a tour of flood-affected areas in Assam, starting with a visit to relief camps in Fulertal after landing at Silchar airport. His visit aimed to assess the situation firsthand and interact with displaced residents.

However, his scheduled visit to Manipur stirred controversy, drawing sharp criticism from BJP’s IT cell chief, Amit Malviya. Malviya accused Gandhi of engaging in “sick tragedy tourism” and blamed the Congress for the ongoing violence in Manipur. He asserted that the ethnic conflict in Manipur is a legacy of the Congress party’s governance.

“Forget Third Time Fail Rahul Gandhi, did any Congress leader, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was a member of Rajya Sabha from Assam, visit the strife-torn region. ‘Balak Buddhi’ (a grown man with a child’s mind) is simply indulging in sick tragedy tourism,” Malviya criticized in a social media post.

Despite the backlash, Rahul Gandhi proceeded with his itinerary, planning to visit a flood relief camp in Lakhipur, Manipur, followed by interactions with residents in Jiribam district. His journey through the troubled region continues amidst heightened political tensions.
