Rahul Gandhi’s “Indian State” Remark Sparks FIR; Assam Congress Slams Action as Politically Motivated

Assam: The filing of a case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his remark about the “Indian state” during the inauguration of ‘Indira Bhavan’ has triggered a political uproar in Assam. Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah has strongly condemned the FIR, accusing the Assam Police of acting as an instrument of the ruling BJP.

Borah criticized the move as selective targeting, highlighting that despite three complaints filed against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for alleged communal speeches, no action has been taken against him. “This disparity underscores the biased approach of law enforcement under BJP’s influence,” Borah stated. He further questioned the lack of investigation into the Saradha chit fund scam involving Sarma, alleging that central agencies like the CBI and ED are shielding ruling party leaders.

The FIR against Gandhi was registered at Pan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati, based on a complaint by Monjit Chetia. The case accuses Gandhi of undermining India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity through his statement. Filed under Sections 152 and 197(1)d of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the complaint alleges that Gandhi’s remark—”his fight is against the Indian state itself”—constitutes a threat to public order and national security.

Chetia claimed the statement was a deliberate attempt to incite rebellion and delegitimize the state’s authority. “This statement promotes subversive activities and fosters separatist sentiments, threatening national unity,” he alleged. He further contended that Gandhi’s frustration over the Congress party’s electoral losses had driven him to undermine democratic norms. “Rather than gaining public trust through democratic means, he seeks to provoke disaffection against the government,” the complaint read.

The Congress, however, has dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Borah reiterated that Gandhi’s statements were taken out of context to stifle opposition voices. “This FIR is an attempt to divert attention from the failures of the BJP-led government,” Borah said, vowing to stand firmly by the Congress leader.

The controversy has deepened the political divide in Assam, with Congress leaders accusing the BJP of misusing state machinery to suppress dissent, while the ruling party defends the FIR as a legitimate step to safeguard national unity. The incident has sparked a broader debate on free speech, dissent, and the boundaries of permissible political discourse in India.
