Railway Protection Force Cracks Down on Smuggling and Ticket Touting Across Northeast Frontier Railway
Guwahati, 24th June: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) has intensified its efforts against smuggling and ticket touting, resulting in significant recoveries and apprehensions in recent weeks.
From June 1 to 15 alone, the RPF recovered contraband goods valued at over Rs 1.22 crore from various locations within NF Railway. During this period, 15 individuals were apprehended for their alleged involvement in smuggling activities.
Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, highlighted that from January to May 2024, the RPF of NF Railway seized contraband and smuggled goods worth more than Rs 16.21 crore. In addition, 217 individuals were apprehended for their role in these illegal activities.
The crackdown also targeted ticket touts, with the RPF apprehending 5 individuals and recovering railway tickets worth over Rs 90,000 from their possession during recent checks and drives.
CPRO Sabyasachi De further noted that a joint operation of RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP) at Guwahati railway station on June 13 led to the apprehension of two individuals and the recovery of 89 grams of brown sugar valued at approximately Rs 17.80 lakh from the Donyi Polo Express.
In another successful operation on June 9, the RPF team of Kishanganj and CIB team of New Jalpaiguri conducted a raid at the PRS counter of Aluabari Road railway station. They recovered 21 PRS tickets worth around Rs 55,223 and apprehended one tout.
All apprehended individuals have been prosecuted under relevant sections of the Railways Act, underscoring NF Railway’s commitment to curbing illegal activities and ensuring passenger safety and security across its network.
