Rajya Sabha: Sonowal to be Elected Unopposed?

Guwahati: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is all set to be elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha by polls in Assam.

On 21 September, the former Chief Minister of Assam filed his nomination from a Rajya Sabha seat before the Returning Officer Dulal Pegu at the Assam Assembly.

However, he is likely to be elected unopposed as the opposition parties decided not to field any candidate against him.

Sonowal is the common candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies — the Asom Gana Parishad and the United People’s Party Liberal.

He further thanked the opposition parties for not putting up their candidates against him.

It may be mentioned that Sonowal currently represents the Majuli seat in the 126-member Assembly and his nomination to the Upper House in Parliament became necessary after he was made a Union Minister.
