Rare White Elephant Born in Myanmar

Guwahati: A rare white elephant has been born in western Myanmar revealing what many in the nation with a Buddhist majority consider to be an auspicious animal, state media said on Wednesday.

The infant was born last month in western Rakhine state, measures around 70 centimetres (two and a half feet) tall and weighs about 80 kg (180 pounds).

Seven of the eight traits connected to rare white elephants were present in the newborn. A local newspaper described it as having “pearl-colored eyes, a back shaped like a plantain branch, white hair, a peculiar tail, auspicious plot marks on the skin, five claws on the front legs and four on the back legs, and enormous ears.”

There are currently six white elephants in captivity in the military-built capital Naypyidaw, according to state media — mostly from Rakhine state and the southern Ayeyarwady region.
