Ready to resign, says Uddhav Thackeray amid Maharashtra pol crisis

Guwahati: Amid escalating political crisis in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that he is ready to step down from his position and leave the official residence allotted to him if there is any official statement from the rebel MLAs.

Thackeray stated in a speech to the state: “I will deliver my resignation letter if they come before me and ask for it,” adding that the town’s rejection hurts the most.

In a letter to the state governor and deputy speaker earlier today, up to 34 Shiv Sena rebel MLAs named Eknath Shinde as their leader as the political climate in Maharashtra continues to be chaotic.

The partnership with the ideologically opposed Congress and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP was allegedly the source of “enormous unhappiness,” according to the resolution of the breakaway section.

Out of the 55 MLAs the Shiv Sena has in total, 40—including six independents—have supported Shinde. If they resign, Sena will have 15 members remaining in the assembly.

It may be noted that, Shinde requires the backing of at least 37 MLAs in order to shield them from the anti-defection law.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, presided over a meeting with cabinet ministers via video conference while earlier today testing positive for Covid-19.
