Red alert in Sikkim, puts Assam and Meghalaya on orange as IMD warns of flash floods for next 48 hours

Northeast Desk, 4th October: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Sikkim and an orange alert for Assam and Meghalaya for the next 48 hours, starting on October 4, due to the imminent flood threat posed by the Teesta river in Sikkim.

The Teesta river in Sikkim has reached an unprecedented level of swelling, as heavy rainfall and thunderstorms have battered the region. This has resulted in significant devastation, with landslides and flooding affecting the state.

In the wake of this disaster, approximately 25 army vehicles, parts of the ATTC college, and a few army personnel have been swept away by the raging waters.

Furthermore, the Education Department has taken the decision to close all government educational institutions until October 8.
