Reliance Withdraws ‘Operation Sindoor’ Trademark Bid, Calls it a Symbol of National Bravery

New Delhi— In a swift and respectful move, Reliance Industries has withdrawn its trademark application for the term “Operation Sindoor,” acknowledging that the phrase is now a symbol of national pride and military valor following India’s recent anti-terror operations.

The company clarified on Thursday that the trademark filing—made just a day earlier by Jio Studios under Class 41 for education and entertainment services—was done “without proper authorisation” by a junior employee. “Reliance Industries has no intention of trademarking Operation Sindoor, a phrase which is now a part of the national consciousness as an evocative symbol of Indian bravery,” the company stated in its official release.

The withdrawal comes amid public scrutiny and criticism after several applications, including those by individuals such as Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, retired Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberh, and Alok Kothari, surfaced attempting to claim rights to the phrase.

The term “Operation Sindoor” gained prominence after the Indian armed forces launched a coordinated strike on May 6–7 against terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 25 Indian lives. The Ministry of Defence later described the mission as “focused, measured, and non-escalatory,” emphasizing that no Pakistani military targets were hit.

“Operation Sindoor is the proud achievement of our brave Armed Forces in India’s uncompromising fight against the evil of terrorism,” Reliance reiterated, firmly disassociating itself from any commercial attempt to appropriate the phrase.

The company concluded by reaffirming its patriotic stance: “Our commitment to the motto of ‘INDIA FIRST’ remains unwavering.”

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the ethical limits of intellectual property in matters of national importance.
