Renowned BHU Professor Appointed as New VC of Sikkim University
GANGTOK — In a significant move for Sikkim’s academic landscape, the Central government has named Professor Santanu Kumar Swain from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as the new vice-chancellor of Sikkim University. The appointment, made by President Droupadi Murmu in her capacity as the Visitor of the central varsity, was formalised through a notification from the Ministry of Education on Thursday. Prof. Swain will take charge for a term of five years or until he turns 70, whichever comes first.
The appointment of Prof. Swain, who has served at one of India’s premier educational institutions, is expected to bring a new direction to Sikkim University’s academic and research endeavours. He will be taking over from Professor Abhijit Dutta, who has been holding the position as officiating VC.
Officials believe that Prof. Swain’s vast experience will be instrumental in further enhancing the institution’s standing in the eastern Himalayan region, bolstering its reputation for academic and research excellence. The Ministry of Education has also communicated the decision to all relevant authorities, including the President’s Secretariat, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The news has been received with much optimism, with the academic community hopeful for a new era of growth and innovation under his leadership.
