Renowned Indian Ghazal Singer Pankaj Udhas Passes Away At 73 After Prolonged Illness

Entertainment Desk, 26th February: India’s ghazal legend, Pankaj Udhas, has passed away today at the age of 72, as confirmed by his family members. They shared the heartbreaking news, stating, “With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on February 26, 2024, following a prolonged illness.”

Pankaj Udhas, known for timeless classics like ‘Chitthi Aayi Hai’ and ‘Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera’, succumbed to a prolonged illness. Born in 1951 in Gujarat, he stood as one of India’s most esteemed ghazal maestros, alongside luminaries such as Jagjit Singh and Talat Aziz.

Udhas rose to prominence with his soul-stirring rendition of ‘Chitthi Aayee Hai’ in the 1986 film Naam, starring Sanjay Dutt. Since then, he captivated audiences worldwide with numerous albums and enthralling live performances, solidifying his status as a veteran Ghazal singer. Additionally, he ventured into music composition for films and contributed as a playback singer.

In recognition of his unparalleled contribution to music, Pankaj Udhas was honored with the Padma Shri, a prestigious civilian award bestowed by the Government of India, in 2006. His legacy as a virtuoso of the ghazal genre will continue to resonate through his timeless melodies and profound impact on Indian music.
