Renowned Meghalayan Artist Silbi Passah Honored with Padma Shri Award

Northeast Desk, 10th May: At the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s investiture ceremony on May 9, President Droupadi Murmu bestowed the prestigious Padma Shri award upon Silbi Passah, a celebrated cultural icon from Meghalaya.

Passah, a retired Hindi teacher hailing from Riatsamthiah in Shillong, was lauded for her significant contributions to the realm of art and for her efforts in promoting Khasi-Jaintia folk music and traditional instruments.

Her expertise in socially useful productive work (SUPW) and music education, coupled with her work as a resource person for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the Directorate of Educational Research & Training, garnered widespread acclaim.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, present at the ceremony, extended heartfelt congratulations to Passah and other Padma awardees. Over the years, Passah and her troupe have represented the region at various national festivals through collaborations with the state’s art and culture department and the North East Zone Cultural Centre.

The Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, is bestowed annually for distinguished service in various fields of human endeavor.
