Renowned Sikkimese Mountaineer Ashal Rai Dies During Nun Kun Expedition

Gangtok: It is with profound sadness that the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco Tourism (IHCAE), Namchi, confirmed today the untimely demise of their esteemed instructor, Ashal Rai. The veteran mountaineer tragically lost his life on July 15 while undertaking an advanced expedition to summit the formidable Nun Kun peak in Ladakh.

Rai, a resident of Lower Chemchey, South Sikkim, was a key member of a 15-person advanced mountaineering team. While details surrounding the exact circumstances of his death at high altitude are still emerging, sources close to the expedition have corroborated the heartbreaking news. Two other mountaineers from Sikkim, who were also part of the same team, have been reported safe.

The IHCAE has expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Rai’s immense contributions as one of their most experienced and passionate mentors. His exceptional skills, rigorous discipline, and steadfast dedication to fostering the next generation of climbers had earned him widespread respect. News of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout Sikkim’s close-knit mountaineering and adventure sports fraternity.

Currently, concerted efforts are underway to retrieve and repatriate his remains to Sikkim for the last rites. The IHCAE is working in close coordination with local authorities and rescue teams in Ladakh to ensure the operation is conducted with the highest degree of respect and diligence.

Sikkim mourns the loss of a true legend, a man who not only conquered challenging peaks but also inspired and uplifted countless aspiring adventurers with his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment.
