Repolling Underway in Manipur’s Inner Lok Sabha Constituency
Northeast Desk, 22nd April: Repolling is currently underway at 11 polling booths in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency in Manipur. This decision follows the declaration by the election commission of the voting on Friday as null due to instances of violence, including gunfire and clashes.
The chief electoral officer announced on Saturday that repolling would take place at these 11 stations on April 22. The polling stations conducting the repolling include Moirangkampu Sajeb and Thongam Leikai in Khurai constituency, four in Kshetrigao, and one in Thongju in Imphal East district, as well as three in Uripok and one in Konthoujam in Imphal West district, according to the official.
Conflict-hit Manipur reported instances of firing, intimidation, destruction of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), and allegations of booth capturing at several polling booths during the Lok Sabha elections on Friday.
The state, comprising Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur constituencies, recorded a voter turnout of 72 per cent. The Congress party demanded a repoll at 47 polling stations, alleging election rigging and booth capturing. Manipur Congress president K Meghachandra confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with the Chief Electoral Officer, seeking a repoll at 36 stations in Inner Manipur and 11 in Outer Manipur.
