Rescued Elephant Succumbs to Injuries in Assam
Guwahati: The wild elephant, who had been saved by the forest department after being struck by a train, passed away on Wednesday in Mariani of Assam.
The elephant spent 40 hours in agony in a mud pool after receiving injuries.
A team of medics from Kaziranga was reportedly due to arrive today to continue treating the injured elephant, who was reportedly being treated by one doctor in Mariani. Sadly, the elephant passed away from its wounds the next morning.
The elephant allegedly perished as a result of a drawn-out rescue effort and delayed medical care.
The wild elephant that had been struck by a speeding railway in Assam’s Titabor on Sunday was successfully extricated by forest department authorities on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old elephant was found in a mud puddle. Officials from the forest were finally able to save it after a protracted effort. A JCB was used to hoist the elephant, which was then loaded onto a truck.
Notably, a speeding Rajdhani Express train moving through Jorhat district struck a female elephant and her calf while they were crossing a railway line close to Kharikatia railway station.
The female elephant survived even though it was initially believed that the calf, who was around 10 months old, had been killed.
The elephant, which apparently damaged its leg in the collision, woke the locals up with its squeals. Officials from the forest department arrived on the scene, but rescue efforts were hampered by the poor weather.
