Riyan Parag’s Record-Breaking Century Rescues Assam in Ranji Trophy
Sports Desk, 8th January: Rajasthan Royals cricketer Riyan Parag showcased an exceptional performance for his state team, Assam, in their ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 Elite Group B match against Chhattisgarh on Monday (January 8).
Leading Assam in the premier domestic tournament, the former India U-19 cricketer played a captain’s innings in the second inning, helping his team post a formidable total of 254 runs. The right-handed batter displayed an incredible show, amassing 155 runs off just 86 balls, scoring 11 fours and an impressive 12 sixes. During this remarkable innings, Parag set a new record by scoring the second fastest century in the history of the Ranji Trophy, achieving the milestone in 56 balls.
While star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant holds the record for the fastest century in Ranji Trophy history, Parag’s quick century helped Assam avoid an embarrassing defeat by an innings margin. His extraordinary knock provided Assam with a target of 87 runs to defend on the final day of the match.
Batting at No. 4 for Assam, Parag contributed significantly by adding 58 runs for the fourth wicket with Bishal Roy (8). His dismissal occurred as the ninth batter, with Assam reaching a total of 245 runs in 51.3 overs. The invaluable innings by Parag came after Assam had managed only 159 runs in their first inning in response to Chhattisgarh’s 327.
With this standout performance, Riyan Parag played a crucial role in giving Assam a fighting chance in their first match of the season in Elite Group B, where they are grouped with cricket powerhouses like Mumbai, Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Bihar.
