Road Accident Claims Lives of Two Assam Residents in Meghalaya
Ri-Bhoi, Meghalaya – In a heartbreaking incident, two young individuals from Assam lost their lives in a road accident on the Guwahati-Shillong highway (NH06) in Ri-Bhoi district on Sunday morning.
The victims, identified as Nilutpal Dowari (23) and Gargee Chutia (21), were riding a Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle when the accident occurred near Shangbangla.
According to police reports, the accident happened as the motorcycle attempted to overtake a truck (registration number AS01RC0413) while navigating a sharp curve. Witnesses stated that the bike lost control and collided with the truck, which could not avoid the impact due to the suddenness of the situation. Tragically, the truck subsequently ran over both riders before they could get up, resulting in fatal injuries.
Emergency services were alerted, and the police, along with medical staff, recovered the bodies from the scene. The deceased were pronounced dead at the site of the accident. Their remains were later transported to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for autopsy and further investigations.
Both Nilutpal and Gargee were reportedly a couple who had rented the motorcycle from Guwahati for a weekend ride. Nilutpal hailed from Moranhat in Dibrugarh district, while Gargee was from Charaideo. The local community has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss, highlighting the need for increased safety measures on the region’s roads.
Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, including a medical examination of the truck driver. The motorcycle and truck involved in the collision have been secured at Nongpoh Police Station for further scrutiny.
