Roads & Bridges Minister NB Dahal Assesses Landslide Damage and Supports Stranded Tourists in North Sikkim

Northeast Desk, 17th June: In the wake of incessant rainfall and consequent landslides disrupting road connectivity in North Sikkim, Roads & Bridges Department Minister NB Dahal visited Lachung to assess the situation and interact with the stranded tourists. Over 1,200 tourists, including 15 foreigners, have been marooned in the town due to blocked roads.

Minister Dahal assured the tourists of swift and safe evacuation efforts and praised the ongoing efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to restore connectivity. The BRO has been working tirelessly to clear the roads and re-establish routes that have been severely impacted by the relentless rains since June 11.

Key routes such as Dikchu-Sanklang-Toong, Mangan-Sanklang, Singtham-Rangrang, and Rangrang-Toong have been affected by multiple landslides and formation breaches, leading to a complete severing of connectivity to the region. The situation was worsened by the collapse of a newly constructed suspension bridge at Sanklang, the primary link to North Sikkim and the Dzongu region.

Despite the significant challenges posed by unprecedented heavy rains, the BRO has undertaken a massive restoration effort to reconnect the region and ensure the safe evacuation of the stranded tourists.
