Roopkar Magazine Set to Return After Decades-Long Hiatus

A significant revival is underway as Roopkar, a pioneering Assamese-language monthly magazine dedicated to cinema, theatre, and culture, prepares for a highly anticipated return. The publication, which held a prominent place in Northeast India’s cultural scene, is set to reappear after a long period of dormancy.

The magazine, originally established in 1975 by the respected journalist and humorist, the late Pabitra Kumar Deka, was a tabloid-sized monthly that flourished until the early 1990s. During its initial run, Roopkar achieved widespread popularity, becoming the most sought-after entertainment magazine in the region. Its influential advisory board included the legendary singer-composer Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and the esteemed writer Nirode Chaudhury, adding to its prestige.

Roopkar’s impact extended beyond its editorial content. In 1975, it introduced the Roopkar Awards, Assam’s first popular film awards, solidifying its role in shaping the regional film industry. The magazine provided a platform for both established and emerging writers, publishing a diverse range of literary articles, essays, and comprehensive coverage of Assam’s art and culture. It served as an invaluable educational resource for aspiring cultural journalists and significantly influenced a generation of readers, acting as a cornerstone of Assamese art and literature.

In a move to commemorate its 50th anniversary, Roopkar will be republished in April 2025 as an Annual Special issue. This revival is being spearheaded by Pallabi Borah on behalf of Roopkar Prakashan, with filmmaker and author Prodyut Kumar Deka, son of the late Pabitra Kumar Deka, taking on the role of editor. The resurgence of Roopkar aims to pay tribute to its rich legacy while also documenting and promoting Assamese cinema, theatre, and culture for a new wave of readers.
