Rs 1,400 Crore Elevated Corridor Approved for Darjeeling Region to Boost Connectivity and Ease Traffic
Sikkim: Darjeeling MP Raju Bista has announced a major infrastructure development for the region, with the Central Government approving a substantial Rs 1,400 crore for the construction of a 14-km elevated corridor between Sevoke Cantonment and Sevoke Bazar.
The ambitious project, set to be completed within three years, is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the travel experience for both residents and tourists.
“This is a dream project for our region and fulfills my vision of providing world-class infrastructure,” Bista stated. The elevated corridor will not only provide a seamless travel route but also bolster the local economy by improving access to key areas in the region, including Siliguri, Kalimpong, Darjeeling, and Sikkim.
The new infrastructure is expected to ease long-standing traffic issues, particularly around the Sevoke area, which has been notorious for frequent bottlenecks, especially near the railway level crossing.
The elevated corridor project is part of Bista’s broader efforts to address the critical transportation challenges in the region.
In May 2023, Bista had appealed to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, urging the government to expedite the upgradation of NH 10, a crucial route connecting Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Dooars, and Sikkim. The approval of this project is a significant step in addressing those issues, providing smoother travel options for people commuting to and from the region.
In addition to the elevated corridor, Bista also highlighted progress on several other key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity in the area. These include alternatives to the Coronation Bridge, the Siliguri Ring Road, and new highways linking Siliguri to Darjeeling and Teesta. Bista assured residents that these projects would not only reduce travel times but also create new economic opportunities for the region.
Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nitin Gadkari, Bista emphasized the government’s commitment to the development of Darjeeling hills, Terai, Dooars, and Sikkim. “These projects reflect the government’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure and promoting economic growth in the region,” Bista said. The elevated corridor and the accompanying infrastructure improvements are expected to transform the region’s connectivity and pave the way for future growth and development.
