Rs 951 Crore Tura Bypass Gets Green Light, Set to Transform Meghalaya Connectivity

Guwahati – The Union Government has given its nod to a substantial Rs 951.27 crore allocation for the much-anticipated Tura Bypass project in Meghalaya. This vital infrastructure development, announced by Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari, promises to redefine connectivity and ease traffic woes in the region.

Spanning a considerable 29.03 kilometres within the Tura district, the bypass will be constructed to a 2-lane configuration with paved shoulders, linking NH-127B to NH-217. This strategic connection holds immense importance for the entire Northeastern corridor. NH-217, previously known as NH-51, serves as a critical artery, connecting Guwahati to Dalu, a key town on the international border with Bangladesh, which also functions as an inland customs check-post.

The proposed bypass will strategically commence near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and culminate at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. This meticulously planned route will effectively circumvent the existing alignment that currently navigates through the heavily developed and often gridlocked urban core of Tura town. The current thoroughfare is notorious for its narrow road widths and the sheer volume of vehicular movement, leading to significant mobility challenges.

Authorities anticipate that the new bypass will bring a much-needed reprieve to Tura’s internal road network, drastically reducing congestion and significantly improving overall travel efficiency. By segregating through traffic from local commuter movement, the project is poised to enhance road safety, facilitate smoother freight movement, and provide a considerable boost to regional connectivity across the state and beyond.
